The famous town of Oia really is picture perfect — it’s like stepping into a postcard. My husband and I, who were enjoying our honeymoon, rented a traditional cave house in the town, and it was incredible. It’s so close to all the shops, restaurants, and it’s the perfect place to see the beautiful sunsets Santorini is known for. In Oia you will definitely find a variety of things to enjoy.
The island’s local tavernas which serve fresh, delicious Greek food, can be found everywhere and literally inches from the ocean. Savvas Popeye was one of our favorite tavernas while visiting the town of Thira. It was right in front of the beach, the food and drinks were amazing (would recommend the Greek beer Mythos!), and the best part is right after you’re done eating you can relax on the beach. Another great place to eat, Restaurant Finikia in the town of Finikia, just about a mile away from Oia. They had great food, an amazing view, and lovely service. Finally, Sunset Ammoudi Taverna was also a great place as they serve fresh octopus and fish that have been pulled directly from the bay the restaurant is sitting on.
This Greek island is filled with things to do! You can enjoy a romantic and relaxing time at the winery, Santo Wines, where you’ll also be mesmerized by the beautiful views and great tasting wine. You can be adventurous and hike from Fira to Oia or take a boat tour around the Caldera, hike the volcano, and swim in the hot springs that were created years ago after a series of volcanic eruptions. And if you like history, you will enjoy touring the Akrotiri archaeological site, or as some call it the “Greek Pompeii”, in the town of Thira or the Prophet Elias Monastery in the town of Pyrgos, which stands on the highest point of the island.
